About the Aadhar Project in India

A mere residence or place of birth is not enough to declare you’re bona fide in India. Like many other nations identity proof in India has become imperative. There are many cards used as instrument of legitimacy for specific purpose. Some of these are the passport for International travel, pan card for income tax and driving license for driving cars in the country.

Having proved useful more legal documents were introduced in India for specific purpose and photo identity. The voter card ensures your voting ability while the ration card offer benefit of food rationing by the Government at reasonable price for those below the poverty line.

But for a long time an all purpose social identity was missing in the country. In order to fulfill the lacuna Aadhar Project was launched by the Indian Government. The project aimed for establishing a unique social identity for each citizen in India. The result was UID Card issued by UIDAI under the Aadhar Project.

The UID Card is a twelve digit number and is unique for each individual. The identification process uses modern scientific methods one such is biometric information gathering. This is a process of recording human physical trait; the identifiers used are those that can be distinctly measured. There are two elements taken into consideration the physiological and biological characteristics. The former includes fingerprints, DNA, face recognition, palm prints, hand geometry and iris recognition. The behavioral characteristics measured are voice and gait. Some other factors may be taken into consideration for both.

During the process traditional methods are also taken into consideration like the photo identity proof. Some of these are driving license, pan card and passport. These are reliable identity proof and useful in collating identity of each individual.

The UID number is useful for distributing various public welfare schemes implemented by the Indian Government. It used a photo identity proof on many instance like opening bank account, applying for loans and passport or visa.

The UID card is useful in controlling illegal stay in India and it can help trace out people with criminal intent besides terrorists and illegal settlers. All the information gathered during the issuance of the number is stored in a Central Database by UIDAI using secure servers. This is an ambitious project by Indian Government with aim to bring more than billion card holders from children to adult citizens. Though it has not been made mandatory for applying for the number it could be made as one in the near future.
